The "chicken or the egg" debate on certifications vs experience has quite the history. Nevertheless I see value in both pursuits simultaneously. One is more academically focused, and the other is the veteran foreman approach. However, I am partial to "trail by fire". There's nothing like staying up till 4am because you didn't set your backlinks correctly in your project file and forgot to commit your code every time you made a major change. That sucks. But it serves as the "hot stove". I have an extensive construction background so I see tremendous value in building as many projects as possible and getting better every time. Mind mapping is also a technique I use extensively preparing for these exams.
